The Catalyst: From White Noise to New Spaces
For Luna, basketball was never about playing on the court; it was about living in its rhythm. Growing up with a dad from NY who always swore he was nice on the court, and living right across from a local basketball court before it was redeveloped into Queens Center Mall, the sound of leather hitting asphalt was the constant white noise of home. From the courts of New York to the streets of London, everyone around her breathed the game. She didn't play, but she observed every detail: the grit, the determination, and above all, the hoop and backboard as the ultimate symbol of the goal.
Then came the shift into adulthood: the relentless climb, the weight of rising rents, and the transition into high-pressure professional worlds. For the first time, the dribble of a basketball vanished from the background. But while the physical balls disappeared, the spirit behind them didn't. The drive that once fueled dreams of being like Kobe, Mike, or LeBron simply mutated into a new arena: the fight for creative, personal, and financial freedom.
Rich Hoop Dreams emerged from that realisation: a four-year journey of returning to pure play, discovery, and relentless problem-solving to reconnect our neighbourhood roots with spaces of art, curation, and lasting influence.
The "Starting 5": Symbols, Mediums & Synthesis
Using the very symbol of the goal, the hoop and backboard, as the central canvas felt like the ultimate synthesis. Just as five players set the tone on a basketball court, the Starting 5 serve as the physical anchor of this exhibition.
Blending multiple mediums to explore how we merge, remain, and move through different stages of life, Luna spent four years teaching herself an intricate suite of hands-on disciplines:
-
Sculpting & Framing: Constructing custom structural forms and architectural backdrops.
-
Leatherworking: Precision glueing, hand-stitching, and manipulating leather across non-traditional surfaces.
-
Weaving & Mixed Media: Interlacing chains, netting, cultural textures, neighbourhood symbols, and raw materials into permanent art assets.
By elevating these symbols into fine art, The Starting 5 honours where we started while positioning our culture as a store of value, leverage, and economic sovereignty.
Cinematic Storytelling: A Global Lens
To ground these physical works in raw human emotion, Luna authored a series of narrative mini-films. Having lived across Bermuda, New York, and London, her perspective is inherently global. To capture this, she collaborated with directors whose distinct visual styles reflect their own Rich Hoop Dreams mindsets:
-
Jolade Olusanya (British-Nigerian Director)
-
Dion Greene (Bermudian Director)
-
Joel Paula (New York - Dominican Director)
Luna brought her storytelling to the table and gave each director full creative freedom to interpret the stories through their own cultural lenses. The result is a striking palette of colours, tones, and energies that seamlessly weave together the transatlantic stories of Bermuda, NY, and London into one cohesive cinematic experience.
